LA PUENTE – Bishop Amat High School held its annual Open House for prospective students and parents on Saturday.
The day started off with an assembly in Carroll Center where administration informed families about school life at Amat along with changes made in the tuition cost and their efforts to keep it low as the economic recession continues.
Once the assembly in Carroll Center was over, the parents were then encouraged to further discover the school by wandering around or by going on a student-guided tour.
Lizeth Bocanegra, an eighth grader, and her mother, Maria Bocanegra, partook in the tour with Analisse Marquez as their tour guide.
“I really liked her. She was very nice and had a nice presence,” said Mrs. Bocanegra. “She presented herself in a good aspect.”
However, some parents felt that the tours were a bit hectic.
“We lost our tour guides a lot. There was a lack of organization in the tour, I feel. However, it was fine,” said Mrs. Natasha Funk. Who went on the tour with her son, Jeremy Funk. “We were able to see many different aspects of the school.”
Camille Nibungco, a prospective student, felt that the tour was “very interesting and informative.”
As the Open House continued, prospective families were introduced to all aspects of Amat. From sports to clubs to dance teams to cheer to the academics to the religious aspect to lure more applicants to Bishop Amat. This left students with many reasons to attend Amat.
“I am really interested in the sports in Amat—especially football and baseball. It is one of the main reasons I want to come here,” said Funk.
However his mother insisted that the most important aspect of Amat was its academics.
“I feel that Amat is a really good choice because it offers a lot of programs that will help my son in the next step to college,” said Mrs. Funk.
Bocanegra agreed that her future is why she wants to attend Amat.
“I hope to come here next year because it is a really good school that will prepare me for college,” she said.
“For me it is the religious aspect of the school that I really like. As a parent, it makes me feel like my daughter is receiving the education I would like her to have,” said Bocanegra’s mother, Maria.
Other students want to attend Amat because of family tradition.
“I want to come to Amat because my sister, Kimberly, is already here,” said Camille Nibungco.
