Twice Friday night, the Bishop Amat offense came up empty after long drives to the goal line.

They would regret these chances later in the game when Loyola hit a 49-yard last-second field goal to win the game.

The Lancers lost their league opener to Loyola 24-23 on Friday night at Kiefer Stadium. The team is now 3-2, but 0-1 in the Mission League.

Quarterback Blake Archuleta had another solid game going 12-22 for 172 yards.

Running back Dominic Barrera had 34 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Jaden Allen had six catches for 95 yards and one touchdown.

With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Amat was driving inside the Loyola 25 yard line looking to close out the game. The Lancers fumbled the ball and Loyola took over from their own 20 yard line. They drove down the field and scored a touchdown to make it 23-21.

With 17 seconds left, Loyola attempted an onside kick and recovered it. After one quick completion, Loyola’s kicker Diego Cacho-Sousa nailed a 49-yard field goal to complete the fourth-quarter comeback and break every Lancers fan’s heart.

The Lancers fumbled twice during the game, each occurring inside the Loyola 20 yard line. The second coming with two minutes left in the game and a chance to secure the win. The Lancers also missed a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Bishop Amat travels to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame next week for their second league game.
