After struggling through the first half, the Lancers football team turned it on to defeat the Dominguez, 28-14, Friday night at Kiefer Stadium.
At halftime of the Bishop Amat football season opener against the Dons, the Lancers seemed to be struggling, as the score was tied 7-7.
The Lancers, who have returned with a young team, kept getting beat trying to defend the Dons’ Wing-T offense, but found their way in the second half.
Initially, the Lancers started well as they halted the Dons first drive of the game and forced them to punt. On a bad snap the ball went over the Dons’ punters’ head, and the Lancers recovered it at the 2-yard line. Two plays later Jay Anderson punched it into the end zone with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving the Lancers the early lead of 7-0.
But that was it for the Lancers as their offense struggled.
The Dons scored on a sustained drive in the second quarter, running it for a touchdown from 2 yards out.
But as the second half began the Lancers seemed to have found their way. They forced the Dons to punt, but the ball was downed at their own 3-yard line. But that did not stop the Lancers, as they started a 97-yard drive that ended with Jay Anderson running it in from 20 yards out, which gave the Lancers a 14-7 lead.
It was all Lancers after that.
The special teams then gave the Lancers a great boost. Darien Johnson ran back a punt, receiving a devastating block from sophomore Zachary Shay. This put the Lancers ahead 21-7.
The Lancers then started another drive that ended with Jerry McClanahan throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Chris Garcia. This made the score 28-7.
The Dons retaliated with a 1-yard touchdown run, which made the score 28-14.
The Dons tried to bring the game closer with a late drive that ended with Johnson intercepting a pass in the end zone as time expired.
