Parents met their students’ teachers at Bishop Amat’s Back to School Night on Wednesday night where they sat down to discuss the classes their kids are taking.
“Back to School Night is the parents’ experience from going from one class to another, putting the parents into the student’s desk, and getting to know each of the teachers,” said Mr. Wes Long, a religion teacher.
The second the parents sit down for class, most of the teachers hand out syllabuses for them to read. The teachers then go on to explain the purpose of their courses and expectations for the classes.
The parents also were able to meet their children’s teachers and get to know them on a more personal level.
“Meeting the teachers so far has been nice, I’ve been enjoying it,” said Darryl Lacy, father of transfer student, junior Austin Lacy. “The insight of the classes and knowing what is expected has been helpful.”
As each bell rings, parents move from class to class to get to the next period. ASB and National Honors Society members helping those who might get lost.
Some parents brought their students along to show them around.
“It has not been hard getting to classes,” said Jennifer Boesen, the mother of freshman Tyler Boesen. “I have my son here as a guide. Without him I probably would be getting lost.”
Ms. Boesen said she learned much from her son’s teachers.
“With the time given to the teachers, they were very well prepared and had given out a lot of information,” she said.
Throughout the classes, parents were very attentive and some asked questions about the class.
While parents got to know the teachers, many students waited outside the classrooms watching through windows or roaming around the halls.
“My mom made me come to this,” sophomore Daniele Santana said. “I was already here at school and she didn’t want to come pick me up, take me home, then come all the way back here.”
While some students didn’t want to be at school that late, others took advantage of the situation.
“I wanted to come,” freshman Larissa Munoz said. “I wanted to see what the teachers had to say.”
By the end of the night, everyone seemed satisfied with questions being answered and high hopes for the new year.
“I am excited, especially for the new classes. I am looking forward to a good year,” Mr. Long said.
