SAN DIEGO – The Lady Lancers soccer team’s season came to an end as they were shutout, 2-0, by Cathedral Catholic Dons in the second round of the state championship tournament.
The Lancers were coming off a 3-2 victory in the first round.
Senior Ruby Nichols had a rough game and conceded both goals in the first half.
Juniors Brittany Doan and Alex Ocon of Cathedral Catholic each scored a goal. The goals were assisted by Jessica Clegg and Mikaela Kraus.
Cathedral Catholic’s goalie Hanna Macaulay made saves on all three shots and the Vikings defense would prove to be a big factor in their victory.
The Lancers couldn’t mount any significant offensive attack and ultimately lost the game, 2-0.
The Lancers finish with a 20-5-5 record.
LADY LANCERS SOCCER ADVANCES IN STATE TOURNAMENT
LA PUENTE- The Bishop Amat Lancers were matched up with the La Jolla Vikings in the first round of CIF Southern California Regional Division II playoffs and pulled out the 3-2 home victory in dramatic fashion.
La Jolla’s Rachel Carroll scored the first goal in the 10th minute off of a 25-yard shot that went just below the crossbar and into the net.
The Lancers tied the game shortly after on a 30-yard free kick by Cassandra Reyes in the 17th minute, making the score 1-1.
On the Lancers’ counterattack Reyes was fouled just outside of the penalty box and was granted a free kick. Senior Yazmin Montoya would capitalize on the opportunity and sent a rocket into the net, giving the Lancers the lead in the 23rd minute.
La Jolla answered quickly on a goal from Carroll and would be the last score of the half, the score at 2-2.
The second half started out sluggish until the 68th minute came around. Bishop Amat had a corner kick by Reyes that would find senior forward Nayeli Requejo’s head and found the back of the net.
The Lancers would hold off any chance by La Jolla to try to put in the equalizer.
Third-seeded Bishop Amat (20-4-5) will advance to the second round against second-seeded Cathedral Catholic (23-3-4) of San Diego in the semifinals.
