LA VERNE—After an ugly start, Bishop Amat’s offense dumped the host and rival Damien Spartans by scoring 28 unanswered points, leading to a 28-7 Lancer victory Friday night.
Though the defense held the Spartans from scoring, the Lancers’ offense did not get anything going in the first quarter.
In the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Spartans scored the first touchdown of the game off an 80-yard pass.
Though the Lancers had a chance to strike back, a holding penalty rescinded a 76-yard touchdown pass from senior Rio Ruiz to senior Jalen Moore.
On the following Spartan possession, the Lancers blocked a field goal attempt and took over at their own 35-yard line. However, the Lancers did not convert and remained scoreless.
The Spartans’ punter then fumbled the snap on the next drive and the Lancers recovered at Damien’s 10-yard line.
The Lancers capitalized with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Ruiz to junior Darren Andrews, tying the game up at 7-7 by the end of the half.
Amat then took the lead early in the second half on a Moore 38-yard touchdown rush. Moore again scored off a screen pass from Ruiz, giving the Lancers a comfortable 21-7 lead.
With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Ruiz connected with senior Jacob Patton to put the ball in one last time.
In yet another intense rivalry game, the Amat Lancers had the final word.
The Lancers go to 3-1 on the season and will face the Cathedral Phantoms next Friday at 7 p.m. at Kiefer Stadium.
