Music Review: “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Story by Nicholas Salgado
Staff Writer

Over the last year, Kanye West has been going through some tough times stemming from last year’s MTV Video Music Awards’ incident, in which he went on stage and took away Taylor Swift’s moment.

What better way for him to tell about his struggles than to make an album about it? West’s new album, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” is not only better than his last album, “808s and Heartbreak,” it is by far one of the best albums that he has ever produced.

The first song in the album, “Dark Fantasy,” sets a dark theme for the entire album.

“Gorgeous” tells about how people criticize him constantly and they will never live it down.

“Power” has more of a tribal theme which he goes down the list of haters and tells them that he is back and is ready to prove everyone wrong.

“All of the Lights” is a blockbuster track that features Elton John, Alicia Keys, Kid Cudi, John Legend, Rihanna, and a few more musicians. This songs is an A-list collaboration, with everyone having a part in the song by adding their own touch to the song that goes great together.

Another good collaboration song is “Monster,” which includes Jay-Z, Nicki Manaj, and other rappers. Ulike “All of the Lights,” this song is more rap than the poppish “All of the Lights.”.

“Devil in a New Dress” describes how we try to live in a perfect world but in this world we all sin and struggle to be good.

The song “Runaway” explains how his words and ego had led him to hitting rock bottom. “I’m so gifted at findin’ what I don’t like the most,” West explains in the song.

“So Appalled,” featuring Jay-Z is another dark-themed song.

“Hell of a Life” is a song were it is probably different from the rest, most of it is a guitar and lots of different sounds throughout. This however gets somewhat annoying with so much different noises.

“Blame Game” is probably the most addictive song that tells the story of heartbreak between a couple, “Let’s play the blame game/I love you/ more Let’s play the blame game for sure/. Let’s call her names/ names/ I hate you, more/ Let’s call her names/ names/ for sure,”  John Legend sings. Their is raw emotion in this song and you can personally feel it.

“Lost in the World” is a a great song, this song describes Kanye when he had hit rock bottom, but he picked himself back up and is going to prove to everyone that he is back. This song has a chilling feeling when you listen to it, and you feel every word he is saying. “Who will survive in America” is the second part of the song and it basically describes how America lives in sin and how we need to stand up for ourselves so this nation can be great again.

“My Beautiful Dark Fantasy” goes beyond expectations. Every song on the album has the potential to be a single. West doesn’t just give you another album, he gives you art for you to admire for many year to come. Buy this album for your friends and put it in their stockings.
