With five mats strewn on the Carroll Center floor, and grunts, shouts and whistles coming from five simultaneous matches, Lancers wrestling has officially begun.
Bishop Amat hosted a preseason wrestling tournament Saturday, Nov. 6—its final tune-up before regular season begins in December.
Aside from the high school wrestlers, little league wrestlers, some as young as six, participated in the tournament.
Senior Arsenio De La Rocha, who finished with a win of five out of eight matches, noted that they were not just any little leaguers, but that some were actually national league champions in their divisions and sons to Camilo Gonzalez, former Bishop Amat wrestling coach and upcoming UFC fighter.
But the overall focus of the tournament remained to get the Lancers ready for when the matches actually count.
Even with seniors Robert Ramos and Anthony Rodriguez out with injuries, the wrestling team still believes they will be ready for the start of the season.
“We hope to continue our league championship win streak and we are excited to begin the new season,” said senior Robert Ramos, who is currently out with an injured knee.
Ramos contributed to the tournament this past Saturday by refereeing some of the matches. He is expected to return in early December, just in time for the new season.
“I think we are going to have a good season,” said senior Arsenio De La Rocha. “I think we have a pretty good chance of making CIF. We have a good team.”
