Dozens of students and teachers participated in the first Junior Statesmen of America Thought Talk of the year Tuesday after school in the Brutacao Library to discuss whether teacher hiring and firing and their pay raises should be based on their students’ test scores.
The event kicked off with five-minute arguments by seniors Darshel Landry, who opposes the score-based decisions for teachers, and Carlos Favela, who supports the idea.
Those initial speeches were followed by arguments from Mr. Frederick Bee, Mr. Anthony Garcias, Ms. Christine Shaw and Ms. Katie Gomez.
After all presenters finished, several audience members challenged the presenters with tough questions.
Before the final decision, Mr. Bee and Landry gave two-minute speeches.
The audience took a vote that resulted in a proponent victory.
