Bishop Amat Baseball Prepares for Regular Season and Will Take On Notre Dame in Pre-season Double Header

Bishop Amat baseball will head up to Sherman Oaks to face off with Notre Dame who is currently ranked #1 in the nation according to Maxpreps. They will be playing a doubleheader this Saturday, February 15th, at Marine Corp Memorial Stadium with game 1 starting at 3:00 and game 2 starting 6:00.

Amat had a great season last year having an overall record of 20-9 and a league record of 10-2. Unfortunately, their season ended in a unpleasant way as the Huntington Beach Oilers ended their playoff hopes in round 2 of CIF with a walk off hit in the 7th as Amat fell 2-1. Amat looks to recoup and head back to playoffs this season.

Notre Dame ended the 2019 season with an overall record of 24-7 and a league record of 15-3. Notre Dame got to round 2 of the CIF playoffs but could not come up with a win against the Mira Costa Mustangs.

Many talented players will be taking the field for Amat this season such as senior Jacob Vargas, an elite right handed pitcher who finished the 2019 season with a 1.04 ERA in 33.2 innings pitched. Vargas also had a great year at the plate while hitting .358, 13 RBI’s and struck out only 4 times in 62 plate appearances. Another star player on the roster is junior Tyler White. White hit .330, driving in 6 and stole 11 bases in 2019 as he can burn down the line.

Junior Izaiah Ayala is another player who has a lot of success at the plate and on the mound. Ayala, hit a solid .342 while driving in 14 runs and while on the mound, pitched 25 innings while striking out 35 without giving up a single run.

Senior Jared Gener is another great hitter who slashed .359 with 5 doubles and a triple driving in 9. Junior Izeah Muniz is a great  right handed pitcher for Amat as he finished the 2019 season with a 1.46 ERA and a 4-2 record as he pitched 33.2 innings, struck out 25 and gave up just 7 runs. Sophomore Jacob Hernandez hit an astounding .405 in 15 games, at the same time producing 11 RBI’s and not making a single error while on the field. Steven Vasquez,  a left handed pitcher and outfielder, hit an amazing .429 while driving in 9.

Junior Daniel Briones, a catcher that hit .231 while driving in 7. While may not be known for his hitting, his defense is phenomenal as he had a fielding percentage of .988 and only made two errors over the course of the season.

These are just a handful of players who emerge from the roster and will look to make an impact on the team and bring a championship back to Amat. This weekend we will see what Amat baseball brings to the table for their 2020 campaign and how they are built as they come face to face with one of the best baseball teams in the nation, Notre Dame.
