Lancers Struggle Against Monarchs

Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium, Bishop Amat opened up their 2018 campaign with a 42-14 blowout loss against Orange County powerhouse Mater Dei.

The Lancers started their season on defense where they struggled to stop the dominate backfield of Shakobe Harper and Sean Dollars. But though the struggles of the defense were visible, the offense showed signs of success.

The opening drive for the Lancers was a combination of power running from Junior Damien Moore. Senior Quarterback Blake Archuleta struggled to connect with many of his receivers early on.

The Lancers contained the Monarchs throughout the first quarter only allowing 2 touchdowns, but some miscommunication among the Lancer linebackers and inexperience on the defensive line led to some walk-in touchdowns by Harper.

The Monarchs were unable to get their passing game going during the game but their size on the offensive or defensive lines overpowered the Lancers as they allowed a multitude of big runs.

The second half, the Monarch’s took over with their power and speed rushing. The Lancer offense also began to stagger after three-star running back Damien Moore went down with a knee injury and was replaced by Senior running back Chris Lopez.

Lopez struggled during the second half due largely to the size of the Mater Dei line and lack of ability to find a hole.

The Lancers continued to push and scored on a late touchdown on their last drive after two deep throws from Archuleta.

The Lancers will look to bounce back and turn around their 2018 season on Friday, August 24 at home against Paramount High School.
