LA PUENTE – The Bishop Amat Lancers basketball team came out rattled versus the West Covina Bulldogs on Friday trailing for most of the game.

But with a strong fourth quarter with major contributions from seniors Christian Mora and Joshua Andarza and junior Tyler Vaughns, the Lancers triumphed with an 82-78 victory.

According to assistant coach, Jeff Wold, the Lancers were nervous to start the game because this has been Amat’s biggest basketball crowd in years.

The Bulldogs however, came flying out the gates to start the game and hit almost every three-pointer they took. Bulldog shooting guard Isaiah Bravo was shooting lights out and it seemed as if the big Lancer crowd was almost energizing him and his team to play better.

The big Lancer crowd also seemed to rattle the Lancers as well. Their defense was atrocious in the first half and their offense was shaky at best.

The first half ended with the Lancers down, 45-36.

When the second half started, the Lancers started to look like the team they had been all season long. Lancer small forward Mora, who finished with 19 points, started to pick up the pace, scoring almost at-will against a tired Bulldog defense.

Andarza, who finished with 19, also scored at will in the paint against the smaller Bulldog defenders.

Vaughns came off the bench and was an immediate spark to the team on both sides of the floor. He made defensive stops and converted them into easy fast break points. He played brilliantly for the Lancers and finished with 18 points.

In the final minutes of the game, the Lancers began to pull away and the Bulldogs had to resort to the fouling game to stop the clock. Lancer point guard, Jarick Santos, who finished with 12 points, sank six clutch free throws down the stretch to clinch the game and take home the victory.
