Bishop Amat High School gathered in the Carroll Center Feb 3 to celebrate mass for the feast day of St. Blaise, the patron saint of throats and wild animals.
The mass celebrating St. Blaise was a first for many Bishop Amat students, since the feast day has not fallen on a weekday in quite some time.
Father Mike Sezzi explained in his homily the story of St. Blaise and how he dislodged a fish bone from a young boy’s throat before he was killed for his faith.
The mass was just slightly different with students going up before communion to be blessed with candles crossed in front of their throats which added about 25 minutes to the mass. Following the blessing of the throats, students, faculty and visitors received communion.
