LA PUENTE- Senior Adrian Ortega led the Bishop Amat Lancers with three interceptions and one touchdown in their win against the Santa Margarita Eagles, 38-28, Friday night at Kiefer Stadium.
Sophomore Trevon Sidney started off the game with a return to the 27-yard line. Although Sidney started off the momentum, the Eagles would force the Lancers to punt.
Senior Matthew Zahn put the Lancers in a good position, since the Eagles started on the 12-yard line.
Even with the good positioning, the Lancers were not able to hold the Eagles. Sophomore KJ Costello passed the ball to junior Kyle Sweet for an 86-yard touchdown.
The Lancers struggled to move the ball, but were able to stop the Eagles in their next couple of drives.
Santa Margarita was able to get back on top with another touchdown pass to Sweet for 73-yards.
The Lancers struggled for the rest of the first quarter as they ended it with a fumble recovery for Santa Margarita.
Ortega intercepted the ball on the Eagles first drive of the second quarter.
This would start the momentum for the Lancers, starting a 94-yard drive ending with a 2-yard touchdown from junior Anthony Camargo.
The Lancers would be able to hold off the Eagles offense for the rest of the half, but would also struggle to score themselves.
Ortega would intercept his second pass of the game on the first drive of the second half.
The Lancers would use this to their advantage when senior Koa Haynes would score on a 9-yard rush.
Santa Margarita would come back on their second drive with a 50-yard rushing touchdown by senior Jeremy McNichols.
Junior Christian Wiley would make the Eagles third turnover of the game with an interception, allowing Zahn to make a 26-yard field goal putting the score 21-17.
Ortega caught his third interception of the game and brought it in for a touchdown. This allowed Ortega to tie the school record for most interceptions in one game.
McNichols would score for Santa Margarita on a 1-yard run bringing the score to, 28-24 Amat.
Ortega helped the Lancers out once again by scoring his second touchdown of the game with a 2-yard rush.
The Eagles struggled throughout the entire second half trying to score.
Sidney recovered a fumble and made another turnover with an interception late in the fourth quarter sealing the deal for the Lancers.
The Lancers, 1-0, will play Chino Hills,1-0, on September 6 at Kiefer Stadium.
