LA PUENTE- The Bishop Amat boys varsity volleyball team opened league play this past Tuesday night at the Carrol Center losing in three sets to the Bishop Montegomery Knights.
The Lancers fell behind 10-2 in the first game. However, after a time out by first-year Coach Amanda Gomez, the team lowered the deficit scoring 7 consecutive points off kills by senior Kyle Cazares and junior Jeff Wold.
The momentum, however, went back to the Knights who dominated the rest of the first game winning 25-15.
The Lancers came out for the second game fired-up quickly taking a 5-2 lead. After a Knights’ timeout and multiple Lancer unforced errors, the Knights dominated the game with jump serves. The Knights took the second game with a score of 25-17.
The Lancers took the early lead yet again in the third set. The Knights, however, once again fought back and tied the score 7-7. With five lead changes throughout the set, the Knights pulled ahead with a final score of 25-21.
By the end of the night, the coaches indefinitely suspended senior Nathaniel Buchardt from the team after a conflict with the coaches. The team morale was in the dumps as many players were perturbed.
The team struggles carried into their next league game with the Lancers traveling to face the Phantoms of Cathedral and once again falling in 3 straight sets.
The Lancers hope to end their two-game losing-streak when they host the La Salle Lancers on Monday in the Carrol Center.
