LA PUENTE–The Bishop Amat boys varsity volleyball team opened their season by sweeping the Ontario Christian Knights in three sets at the Carroll Center on Tuesday night.
The Lancers fell behind 2-4 in the first game. However, after a time out by first-year Coach Amanda Gomez, the team took the lead with kills by senior Kyle Cazares and junior Tochi Nwosu.
The boys narrowly won the first set with a score of 25-23. The Lancers kept momentum in the second set, pulling ahead early with more kills by Cazares and some difficult digs by junior Jeff Wold.
The Lancers shut down the Knights in the second set, 25-12. The Lancers pulled ahead in the third set as well.
With blocks by seniors Cazares and Jonathon Ruiz, the Lancers took their first win of the year.
However, they lost at home in three straight sets against the Diamond Ranch Panthers on Wednesday.
Diamond Ranch dominated in the first set, defeating the Lancers 25-20.
Though Amat fought back in the second set, leading 23-18, but fell apart and lost the set in a 29-27 runoff.
The third set was much like the second with the Lancers pulling ahead 23-19 with kills by seniors Kyle Cazares and Nathaniel Burchardt. The boys, however, could not close out the game and lost the set 27-25.
The boys now travel to take on the West Covina Bulldogs on Thursday.
