LA PUENTE–Led by senior April Juarez, the Bishop Amat girls’ soccer team defeated the Walnut Mustangs, 3-1, on Friday at Kiefer Stadium.
The Mustangs took control early in the game, scoring in the sixth minute due to miscommunication in the Lancer defense. However, the Lady Lancers would come back with a goal of their own from April Juarez in the eleventh minute.
From there, the Lancers would hold momentum for the rest of the half. The Lancers debated several close offside calls from the officials, but were still able to make plays.
Another goal off a free kick from Juarez in the 18th minute gave the Lancers the lead. Though the Mustangs fought back and had a handful of shots on goal, senior goalkeeper Nicole Ragano made several acrobatic saves to keep Walnut scoreless for the rest of the game.
The Mustangs tried to make a comeback in the second half, scoring at the 54th minute. The tying goal was negated by an offside call.
Throughout the game, the Lancers and Mustangs were both aggressive. The referees issued four yellow cards to either side.
After the Mustangs fouled Juarez in the goal box, Walnut’s goalkeeper blocked the penalty kick attempt.
To seal the deal for the Lancers, senior Yazmin Slim put the ball in at the 73rd minute, putting Amat up 3-1.
The Lady Lancers end the Mustangs’ season in Round 1 of CIF playoffs for the second season in a row and will travel to face the Yorba Linda Mustangs on Wednesday. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
