Last school year, now-sophomore Anais Vega earned multiple detentions for wearing Toms shoes. In fact, she received so many detentions for the shoes that one of the deans took them away.
At the beginning of the year, the deans and Assistant Principal Mrs. Yvette Salcedo reviewed the school dress code and found that Toms fit the criteria.
“As long as the shoe makes the shoe requirements of a hard sole and is one of the school’s colors then they are allowed to be worn,” Mrs. Salcedo said.
Toms was founded in 2006 by Blake MyCoskie and has become a phenomenon not only at Amat but around the world.
According to the Toms.com, when you buy a pair of Toms, you also buy a pair for a child in poverty, a program know as “One-for-One.”
“Giving is what fuels us. Giving is our future,” founder Blake MyCoskie said on the Website.
Students seem to feel they have done a good deed when they buy a pair of Toms.
“I think it is great that Toms donates to a child in need,” sophomore Vincent Jacobs said. “I feel like there should be more brands like that.”
Mrs. Salcedo said that she thinks Toms’s mission is great.
“The fact that our students is doing the part is great also,” she said.
Toms have really made it big with students because they are not only fashionable but comfortable. Because of their great success, Toms have come out with different types of shoes. From high tops to high heels, Toms keeps coming out with more and more styles.
“They have many designs and yet they feel like slippers,” sophomore Michelle Payan said.
Toms has even expanded to eye wear. With the purchase of a pair of glasses, Toms will help someone else vision. Medical treatment, prescription glasses, or sight-saving surgery is given to someone in poverty. This mission is called, “One for One: Sight.”
Students just can’t get enough of Toms.
“I have four pairs of Toms,” sophomore Pauleen Balino said.
Sophomore Raquel Velarde said she has three pairs, but wants more.
Senior Nathanael Burchardt even started a Toms club at Amat. They have meetings monthly, and the club has many members.
