LA PUENTE–The stands were covered in blue and gold last night as numerous fans cheered on the Lady Lancers volleyball team in the Carroll Center as they crushed the South Pasadena Tigers in the first round of CIF Playoffs, 3-0.
The nerves on the court might have been the reason for a shaky start in the first game, which Amat won, 25-22.
“We could have improved on starting the game stronger,” said Coach Amanda Gomez. ”We made a lot of errors and had to catch up.”
By the second game, the Lady Lancers confidence began to show and beat the Tigers, 25-19. And in the last set dominated, 25-15.
“I think we could have talked it up more, but overall we played very well,” Rachel Seals said referring to the Lady Lancers lack of communication in the early sets. “We made it work and ended up sweeping them.”
Seals, who was named MaxPreps.com Player of the Week, and senior Megan Bowcock said the girls suffered from some jitters going into the game.
“I was a little nervous and excited because it was home game and a lot of people were coming to watch,” Seals said.
Senior Michelle Combes owned with 10 kills along with junior Jillian Nobles right behind her with nine kills on offense. On defense senior Leilani Hobayan shielded the court with 19 digs, while junior Delaney Gurol had 18.
At the end of the game the players huddled together for a picture holding up the Amat victory banner.
“I’m happy with the outcome because they came back and played their game,” said Coach Gomez.
The Lancers continue to play for the CIF banner and face Oaks Christian on Wednesday in the Carroll Center for the second round of CIF.
