Freshman Cross Country star Emily Hubert doesn’t really like to run.
“My parents thought I would be good in it so they put me in it,” she said. “Running was just kind of something I did on the side.”
She said she considered running, which she only did as a hobby and for her school since first grade, even though she played club softball and soccer most of her life.
“I didnt really want to do this,” she said.
Which made Hubert even more surprised to be a Lady Lancer Cross Country record holder and Del Rey League champion, as a freshman.
At Del Rey League Finals last week at Santa Fe Dam, Hubert won the varsity girls race by running the 3-mile course in 17 minutes and 35 seconds. She won league by more than 20 seconds and ran the third fastest time ever at that course.
Next Saturday she will lead the Lady Lancers at CIF Prelims at Mt. SAC.
So what motivates a girl who says she doesn’t really enjoy running?
“I would sound way too self-centered if I said myself,” Hubert said. “I don’t run for someone. I kind of just run for a scholarship.”
Hubert said she hopes to earn a scholarship to college and one day become a doctor.
“My grades are straight A’s for the most part and I take all honors or Accelerated classes,” she said. “I know colleges will want me for running, but really good colleges will see the grades and those need to be very good.”
And during the race?
Hubert sings songs in her head to help get her races over with.
“The song that goes with my beat is ‘Super Bass,’” she said referring to the Nicki Minaj song. “I don’t like sing it to myself. I just like listen to it [in my head].”
However, because most of her time is focused on cross country, Hubert finds it hard to have a social life.
“Cross country takes time away to do hobbies and stuff, but it’s given me great friends and being busy keeps me in check,” Hubert said.
