SHERMAN OAKS–The Bishop Amat Lancers hope to overcome the loss of senior Rio Ruiz, who suffered a knee injury in a last Friday night at Kiefer Stadium 14-3 loss to the Loyola Cubs, when they travel to face the Notre Dame Knights tonight.
“I felt like I could not do anything to help my team. I felt defenseless because of my injury,” said Ruiz. “I did not want this to happen, it was the least of worries that I was going to get hurt.”
Ruiz has been on crutches all week and will most likely not play and expressed disappointment about the loss.
“Going in to the game I was confident that we were going to win,” said Ruiz. “I also thought that was going to be successful that this was our game to win.
Sophomore Koa Haynes took over as quarterback after the injury, but the Lancers could not generate any offense. The Lancers’ lone points came on a 41-yard Alex Gutierrez field goal.
“I went in the game and ran the plays to the best of my abilities,” said Haynes. “I think I did well being on the spot like that, although I think I could have done better.”
The Knights are 5-3 overall and 0-2 in the Serra League. The winner of the game could determine who receives a CIF playoff bid.
Notre Dame is led by running back Khalfani Muhammad, averaging 133 yards per game and has scored 12 touchdowns this season, and running back Sam Robinson, who averages 76 yards in total offense per game and has scored five touchdowns.
