LA PUENTE – Senior Eric Ontiveros has waited two seasons for his chance. In Friday night’s 56-7 Lancer victory over the Cathedral Phantoms, “Onti,” as he’s known around campus, finally played.
Late in the fourth quarter, Ontiveros, who hasn’t played a game since his sophomore year, entered the game at running back and earned one carry and lost three yards. The crowd still cheered and players on the sidelines went crazy. He stayed in for the remainder of the game, lining up at offensive guard and defensive tackle.
As for the remainder of the team, senior running back Jalen Moore continued his fine play by running for 154 yards on only 11 carries and scored three touchdowns. Moore also threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to senior Adam Sanchez.
Once again the Lancers struggled in the first quarter and were held scoreless, missing on a 35-yard field goal.
Early in the second quarter the Phantoms scored the first points of the game on a one-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.
After a couple of empty drives, senior Rio Ruiz connected with Sanchez, who made an athletic outstretched diving catch for a 17-yard touchdown.
Shortly after, Moore rushed for a 37-yard touchdown.
And the rout was on.
On the ensuing kickoff, senior Tyler Roth made a huge hit on the returner causing a fumble, which the Lancers recovered.
Then on a running back option pass, Moore threw a 17-yard pass to Sanchez for a touchdown.
Moore capped off the first half scoring on a 17-yard touchdown run.
The Lancers’ defense started the second half as well as the offense finished the first. On the opening drive, Ruiz returned a 51-yard interception to the house.
On the next offensive series Moore ran for a 58-yard rushing touchdown.
After an unsuccessful offensive series for the Phantoms, junior Dionza Blue returned the punt for a 53-yard touchdown.
To start off the fourth quarter junior Rene Carillo scored the game’s last touchdown.
The Phantoms had their heads down to the floor after huge loss to Amat for the second year in a row. The Lancers won 53-6 last year.
Next Thursday Bishop Amat Lancers travel to play the Venice Gondoliers.
