LA PUENTE – After much trash talking during the week, the Bishop Amat Lancers let their game do the talking Friday night with a rout of the Damien Spartans, 42-7.
The Lancers were led throughout the game by junior running backs Zachary Shay and Jalen Moore, who accounted for five of the Lancers’ six touchdowns. And on the defensive end the Lancers relied on the seniors Michael Juarez and Julian Gener who were in the backfield throughout the night and did not allow a first down until 2 minutes into the second quarter.
The first quarter revolved around the Lancers smash mouth defense that did not let the Spartans do anything on offense.
The Lancers’ offense began with a two catches for 22 and 17 yards, and would end with a 19-yard touchdown pass by junior quarterback Rio Ruiz to junior receiver Adam Sanchez.
The Lancers’ next drive would be successful as well resulting in a 1-yard plunge by Moore taking the score to 14-0 Lancers, ending the first quarter.
At this point, the Spartans were already out of the game, but the Lancers would keep on pouring on the points.
Ruiz led the next drive with two big runs that got the crowd going. However, the Spartans stopped the Lancer offense, but made a mistake with a defensive holding call which would keep the drive alive. The drive would end with a 18-yard screen pass to Shay to make the score 21-0 Lancers.
The next drive would also be successful and would result in a 1-yard plunge by Moore for second score of the game, moving the score to 28-0 Lancers.
Moore would score once again before the half was over with a 3-yard score, just two plays after an 84-yard dash by the junior back, making the game 35-0 Lancers at the end of the first half.
The Lancers’ defense stopped the Spartans’ every move and only gave up a couple of first downs, and the Lancers would capitalize on good field position throughout the game.
The Lancers came out of the gates strong in the second half with a quick, 1-yard touchdown run by Shay, making the score 42-0 Lancers.
In the fourth quarter, the Lancers reserve took over the field.
The Spartans scored late in the game but would never have a chance to come back.
The Lancers will travel to battle the Cathedral Phantoms next week.
Note: Lancers senior cornerback Martin Sandoval sat out of the game with a hyper extended arm.
