Lancers go up early and defeat last-place Loyola

Amat Football Lancers celebrate after scoring a touchdown.

Blake Archuleta and the Lancers’ stout defense dominated Loyola High School in a 41-7 away victory last Friday.

The Lancers continued their dominance in Los Angeles as they defeated the Loyola Cubs for their fourth win in four league games.

Early in the game, the Lancers’ offense tore apart the Cubs’ defense with quick passes and runs that went the distance.

Amat quickly entered the red zone and with a spectacular 12-yard run by senior running back Kenny Collins scored to put the Lancers on top 7-0.

The Lancers then were placed on the defensive side of the ball as they controlled the Loyola offense holding them to one first down on the drive and forcing a punt.

This last punt concluded the first quarter and started the second with the Lancers leading by one score.

On this drive, Archuleta and the Amat offense was stopped until a deep pass from the senior quarterback to senior wide receiver Daniel Garcia opened up the offense for the Lancers. Senior running back Chris Lopez scored the next play to bring the Lancer lead to double digits early in the first quarter.

The Lancers proceed to hold the Cubs to a three and out and force their second punt of the game.

Amat then shocked the Cub defense once more when Archuleta hit senior Jaden Allen on a quick slant that went for 56 yards and a touchdown to make the score 21-0 late in the first half.

On the next defensive series, Bishop Amat began to get pressure on the Loyola quarterback when linebacker Fidel Cabral intercepted a third-down pass.

This set up the Lancer inside the Loyola 15-yard line where in the very next play they scored with a run by Lopez.

The score with less than two minutes left was 28-0 and the Lancers had no ideas of slowing down that pace in the remainder of the quarter.

The Lancers forced a third punt of the half and found themselves set up inside the Loyola redzone.

Archuleta then delivered a ball to a wide open pass to the flat and put the Lancers up 35-0 at the half.

After halftime, the Lancers began to put in their substitutes gradually at many different positions.

They continued to roll in the second half when senior running back Andre Gonzalez scored from 15 yards out to up the Lancer score to 41-0.

Loyola added a touchdown late against the Lancers’ reserves to ruin the defensive shutout. The final score was 41-7.

At the end of the game, the Amat team became aware of winning league after Alemany lost to Notre Dame.

“I told y’all we were gonna do it,” Allen said to the crowd, referring to his prediction from a year before.

The Lancers next game will be against Alemany at Kiefer Stadium, in a matchup of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Mission League.
