Dozens of Bishop Amat students, faculty members, and parents participated in Bishop Amat’s annual Spring Blood Drive in the Carroll Center on Tuesday, March 10.

Many students who have donated at the blood drive before, returned to donate again. One of these returners is senior Bernie Jimenez, who donated for the second time at the spring blood drive.

“I am O-negative which is the universal donor so I feel its very important to donate when I can because its universal to all the other blood types,” said Jimenez, explaining why he gives blood.

Senior Nicholas Xochihua, another Amat student who donated for the second time at the Spring Blood Drive, enjoys donating and thinks that “it’s pretty fun actually.”

“You get to sit out here and chill and eat pizza and drink juice after you donate,” said Xochihua.

Xochihua seemed calm about the whole process of giving blood as well, claiming, “probably the most painful part of it is probably the pricking of the finger.”

However, unlike the returners’ laid back attitude towards giving blood, many first-time donors are often timid and nervous when beginning the process.

“This is my first time donating blood,” said senior Esmeralda Largaespada on the day of the drive, “I was nervous but when she put the needle in but then I was just like ‘ok this is not that bad.’”

Though some of the donors were nervous to give blood, like Largaespada, all of the students who donated were glad they did so and plan on donating again.

“I think its really nice to give back to people, I donate sometimes on my own at my local hospital,” said Jimenez.

Both Largaespada and Xochihua recommend that other students donate in the future.
