The Bishop Amat swim team dove into their season Thursday, March 11, with their first swim meet at Sierra Vista High School with both the boys and girls teams losing against the Baldwin Park school.

Although the Lancers started off the season with a loss, the team has high hopes and expectations for the season ahead.

With the new season comes new obstacles and hope for the swimmers on the Bishop Amat swim team and the pressure the varsity swimmers put on themselves.

“My biggest obstacle was coming close this first meet by .34 seconds,” said sophomore Kimberly Garcia. “It was pretty upsetting, but for my goals I’m already halfway there and it’s just the beginning.”

Other obstacles involve mental strength and keeping the right mind set.

“The hardest thing for me is the last two laps and pushing myself to keep going,” said senior Juniper Terrones, who achieved a personal best in the 200-meter freestyle.

Junior Andrew Figueroa echoed Terrones.

“I get stressed out thinking I won’t be fast enough or doing terrible on my times,” he said.

Garcia hopes to reach her goal of making CIF this season.

“I plan to reach my goal with the support of my team and a mindset of swimming fast with hard work,” she said. Figueroa has goals to be better than last season to make many more memories with his swim teammates.

Four-year swim team member Juniper Terrones hopes that she can make CIF in four individual events.

“I want to end my senior year on a good note and share this CIF win with my teammates,” she said.

The Lancers race next against West Covina High School today at Edgewood Middle School.
