This week Bishop Amat students and faculty celebrated school pride during Pep Week in which they were given the opportunity to dress up according to several themes.
The week started off with the classic sports day as everyone was able to represent his or her favorite sports team.
This day led to the classic clash between UCLA fans and USC fans.
“There was some playful animosity between me and my friend, Justin, who was like ‘eww that’s an ugly sweatshirt’ and didn’t want to hug me because of my USC sweatshirt,” said senior Gabriela Martinez.
On Tuesday, students were given the opportunity to dress up as their favorite Disney characters and turn Amat into the “happiest place on earth” for a day.
Many students went all out on this day coming in costumes of their favorite Disney characters ranging from High School Musical cast to characters from classic Disney movies like Snow White, Minnie Mouse, and Buzz Lightyear to characters from Disney channel shows like the Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana.
Senior Andrew Lane, along with Brett Rexius, Ryan Serrato, and Nick Martinez dressed up as the Cheetah Girls.
“We knew it would be absolutely smashing,” said Lane.
Wednesday gave an excuse to the student body to pull out the brightest colors from their closets without running the risk of looking ridiculous or standing out with the highlighter colors of Neon Day.
“Neon Day was my favorite day because I went all out and I wore my bright pants and my bright shirt, curled my hair and painted my nails,” senior Jenna Palacios said.
Fellow senior Ashley Bacus shared the sentiment.
“My favorite day was Neon Day because I like the colors because on a normal day I wouldn’t wear all that brightness and Neon Day gave me an excuse to wear it,” she said.
Junior Alex Walker found Neon Day “fun because it was a time to go all out with excuse to wear all the colors I wanted.”
On Thursday, students showed their inner dark sides as villains while others demonstrated that they laid on the side of good in the battle of good versus evil on “Superheroes vs. Villains Day.”
“I dressed as Cruella de Vil because I found this big coat,” said senior Katherine Careaga. “I told my mom that I wanted to be a villain and she said, ‘I have a big coat, you can be Cruella.’ I wanted to be a villain because I knew everyone was going to be a superhero so I wanted to be a villain.”
Finally Friday allowed each class to show their pride for a special Class Theme Day.
Seniors had the theme of 90s Ska/Rock/Pop and the class color of turquoise.
Juniors dressed in bright colors, side ponytails, and tights for 80s pop along with the class color of yellow.
Sophomores got the theme of 70s disco with purple as their class color, while the freshmen dressed as greasers for 50s Be-Bop, along with their green class colors.
The Class Theme Day proved to be one of the most crowd-pleasing days.
“Today was my favorite day because I have never dressed 90s before and I can show people I can dress 90s with the clothes I found in the very back of my closet,” said senior Kimberly Basical.
“Today was my favorite day because it was fun getting ready and I really like the theme because it was fun and I really liked the 80s,” said Junior Mychal Cortes
Mrs. Gabby Benson and Ms. Katie Gomez were two of several faculty members, who stayed late into the nights to help make Pep Week happen.
And students like Olumba Ekpo helped in the choreography of the “Blackstreet Boys” routine along with helping in offering ideas in what different activities could be done.
“I also helped bring ideas of different activities we could do,” Ekpo said. “What we can do to set us apart, to add ‘the oomph.’”
In order to accomplish this feat, Ekpo stayed from 4-7 p.m. the entire Pep Week starting on Tuesday.
Pep week finally ended with a high-energy Pep Rally that many seniors said was the best rally experience at Amat.
