Several organizations at Bishop Amat are observing breast cancer awareness month, a campaign every October to increase awareness of this life-threatening disease.
Raising awareness for this sickness is very important to the Amat community. Girls volleyball is wearing pink shoe laces and pink headbands. Cheer and Song is showing their support with pink bows and pom poms.
“I continue to wear my pink headband even outside volleyball, to show my continued dedication to this cause,” said sophomore Tara Van Bergen.
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer.
“Since 1982, Komen has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.” said a source from the ww5.komen.org website.
“I love wearing pink for cheer in support of breast cancer because it shows women sticking together for a great cause,” said sophomore Gigi Munoz.
There are many ways for students themselves to get involved through their communities, like runs/walks for anyone willing to support this cause. Most of the races and walks organized by groups such as the Komen Foundation and the American Cancer Society depend on the dedication of volunteers to make them happen every year. You can also donate blood, which is available to do at Amat.
“I walk in Breast Cancer Awareness Walks to raise money in honor of my aunt,” said Anyssa Rodarte. “It is a great way to get involved with other cancer survivors in your community”.
Support Breast Cancer Awareness month by wearing pink with your team, family or friends. Think Pink!
