MISSION VIEJO–After an incredible season, the Bishop Amat girls soccer team fell to the nation’s third-ranked Claremont Wolfpack, 2-0, in the CIF championship game at Mission Viejo High School on Saturday.
The stubborn Claremont defense, which had not allowed a goal in the playoffs, kept the Lady Lancers’ offense at bay.
Amat started the game off strong with a shot on goal 15 seconds into the game. As they tried to capitalize, the Wolfpack keeper blocked the Lancers’ every attempt.
Claremont shifted the momentum in their favor and carried the ball into Lancer territory, where they scored in the 27th minute, putting the Wolfpack up 1-0.
Heading into the half, the Lancers thought they had tied the game up with a goal of their own, but the referees took it back with a keeper possession call.
At the second half, the Wolfpack charged to the Lancers’ goal and again put it in just four minutes into the second half, extending their lead 2-0.
From there, the Lancers tried and tried to take back the momentum, but were unsuccessful. With several shots on goal, the Lancers missed the goal by mere inches.
The Wolfpack took down the Lancers and went on to win the CIF Division IIIA championship.
Amat goes on to compete in state and will host Coronado Cougars on Tuesday at Kiefer Stadium.
