Ask a handful of Americans what their favorite holiday is and you are bound to receive numerous answers, ranging from Christmas to the Fourth of July.
However, Super Bowl Sunday has become an increasing popular holiday among Americans.
This annual event causes millions of people to sit around the TV with family and friends, taking bets, drinking alcohol, and eating without any shame, even if half the people watching aren’t even football fans.
According to Nielsen, a company that tracks television ratings, 113 million viewers —the most in the game’s history—tuned in to the New York Giants 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots.
Come Monday morning, however, posts on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and talk around campus, predominantly focused on the funniest, most entertaining commercials and halftime show.
Nielson reported that 117.7 million viewers watched the halftime show featuring Madonna.
From Doritos to M&M to new movie trailers from the Hunger Games, Battleship and The Dictator, many companies desire to have a commercials air during the game.
Junior Clarisse Abuel said she liked the Chevy commercial featuring a possible apocalypse.
“One of my favorite commercials was the 2012 Chevy commercial,” Abuel said. “I liked the filming, props and effects, yet my favorite part was when they ‘burned’ Ford when their friend didn’t survive because he didn’t own a Chevy.”
Senior Isabel Salazar favored what the M&M commercial had to offer. The commercial featured a peanut M&M stripping down to his chocolate and dancing to “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO.
“Best commercial ever,” she said.
Junior Emma Taylor enjoyed a Doritos commercial.
“I liked the Doritos commercial with the dog giving the man Doritos for not telling anyone that he killed the cat,” she said.
The Volkswagen commercial was high on her list as well.
“I also like the one where the fat dog started working out so that he could chase the new VW Beetle,” she said. “It made me smile.”
