Maybe Halloween Haunt 2011 is old and played out. Or maybe it was just me. But I swear I could have made Knott’s Scary Farm at my house with Party City decorations and my little sister’s Wal-Mart mask.
Halloween Haunt at Knott’s Scary Farm has been around for 39 years, each year being the same with only a few additions. There are about a thousand monsters working each night along with 13 mazes.
Sure 39 years ago it was new and scary, which caused teens everywhere to flock to the Buena Park theme park. But last weekend, it seemed old and uneventful.
It was very packed and there was little to see. There was no map, so I had to navigate myself around the park to find the different mazes. Every ride is open, including water rides, but the lines are extremely long.
I ended up walking in circles around the park trying to find the mazes. As tradition, the monsters pop up anywhere and aren’t afraid to get in guests’ faces. They will chase you, but eventually they tire.
There are a variety of monsters—vampires, clowns, pig creatures, zombies, dead soldiers, mythological creatures, werewolves, dolls, and even aliens—running around the park scaring people.
The monsters are not as well costumed as they should be but that didn’t stop them from scaring people. To avoid the monsters, all I had to do was talk to them. They were very friendly.
Still some monsters do not hold back when it comes to scaring you. During the Slaughterhouse maze, I had my eyes closed because I’m claustrophobic (even though my friends will probably say I was scared), when one monster told me, “If you don’t want to see, I can rip your eyes out.”
That was one of the scariest moments of the night for me.
The mazes were not very well decorated but some still provided thrills. There was very little room to jump when a monster popped out so I ended up bumping into something or someone every time a masked psychopath came after me.
Like I wrote earlier, maybe my dislike of the mazes comes from being claustrophobic, so I didn’t enjoy being trapped in the narrow spaces.
The maze decorations disappointed me because they looked store bought and unrealistic.
The good news is that I did have one real scare when I went. Unfortunately, that scare occurred on Supreme Scream, which you can ride any time of the year.
