“Sucker Punch,” the new comic book movie by Zack Snyder of “300” fame is definitely one of the best action movies so far this year.
The movie begins with Baby Doll (Emily Browning) put in an insane asylum after shooting her crazed stepfather and accidentally killing her younger sibling. Her goal throughout the film is to find a way to escape the insane asylum.
Between the sudden switches from reality to a fantasy world, the plot in “Sucker Punch” is sloppily put together. And at times feels like a collage of beautifully crafted action scenes.
Even though a weak plot can be a fatal flaw in most movies, in “Sucker Punch,” with its imaginative scenes and beautiful women—Browning, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung—it didn’t matter.
The movie hits its stride when the band of girls goes into Baby Doll’s fantasy world. From battling samurais with chain guns to fighting undead Nazis in World War I, this movie stands out with its action sequences.
Snyder’s creative mind came up with some very interesting landscapes. For example the girls fight in an open environment near a dilapidated church in WWI and later the girls fight in a futuristic city in which you can see the planet Saturn clear as day.
But what really moves the movie is its rocking soundtrack. Without a great soundtrack the action scenes wouldn’t stand out at all.
Snyder cleverly chooses rock remakes for the movie.
For example, “Tomorrow Never Knows” by The Beatles remade by Carla Azar fills the futuristic world in which Baby Doll and the other girls in the asylum attempt to disarm a bomb.
While some may see the lack of understandable story in “Sucker Punch” as a major problem, I didn’t. The music is just too intense and the action scenes are just as awesome. Any fan of Snyder’s work should go see this movie.
