The defending world champions Los Angeles Lakers have gotten off to a strong 13-2 with an almost brand new team.
The Lakers had a busy offseason acquiring players such as Matt Barnes, Steve Blake, Theo Ratliff, Devin Ebanks, and Derrick Caracter.
The new additions to the Lakers make them strong on defense and deep on the bench. Last year the Lakers had their struggles on defense and failed to have a bench that could keep a lead , and forget about extending it.
Matt Barnes, a seven-year veteran, adds another physical defender to the Lakers. Barnes coming off the bench brings a much needed three-point shooter and defense to the second team.
Steve Blake, signed in the off-season from the Los Angeles Clippers, comes off the bench in relief for Derek Fisher. As a seven year veteran, Blake runs the offense and bring a spark for the Lakers while Fisher is resting.
Newly drafted rookies, Devin Ebanks and Derrick Caracter have played small roles coming off the bench for the Lakers but are fine additions showing promise.
Theo Ratliff, a fifteen year veteran signed in the off-season from the San Antonio Spurs. Lakers lacked an experienced big man off the bench last year, but Ratliff provides the Lakers with both.
With the return of Phil Jackson, the Lakers are prepared to go “3-peat” and give Phil Jackson his 12th championship ring. With health problems many did not expect Phil Jackson to coach again after last season, but he returns for another season with a stronger team.
With this strong start the Lakers are favored to win their third straight championship and bring a banner to the Staples Center once again.
