SANTA FE DAM – Led by seniors Iliana Velasquez and Zach Mendoza, the Bishop Amat Boys and Girls Cross Country teams advanced to the CIF Preliminaries after each placed third at the Del Rey League Finals on Saturday at Santa Fe Dam.
The JV girls team tied for first place, while the Varsity girls and boys placed third overall.
“The girls’ team is in rebuilding mode and the boys are still a young team. So it’s no surprise we placed third,” said Coach Daniel Lodolo. “I think Iliana Velasquez has the best chances for the CIF Finals. The boys will probably have to wait a year before they reach the finals.”
Both Velasquez and Mendoza received All-League honors.
Velasquez placed fourth overall with a time of 18:27 for the three-mile course.
“I felt tired,” said Velasquez, who is also a staff member of the Lance. “I was glad that I [achieved a personal record], but I felt that I could’ve pushed it more in the middle.”
Mendoza placed 13th overall with the time of 16:33.
The Lancers hope to continue on the road to CIF championships at the preliminaries on November 13 at Mount San Antonio College.
